Caesar, Gaius Julius 112, 169 Caesar (100-44 BC) was one of the most well-known Roman military officers, scholars, and politicians. During his reign, the Roman Republic was gradually turned into the Roman Empire. "Caesar" became an additional name or title for all of his successors, and words like German "Kaiser" or Russian "Tzar" (both meaning "Emperor") were derived from it.

The transformation of the Republic into an Empire has inspired many works of (Science) Fiction, most notably the Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov as well as Star Wars.
